Understanding- David Nance

One of the things that we all seem to crave as we grow toward adulthood and even old age is for others to understand us. Even if what we think and do isn’t appreciated, at least we want to be understood. This puts a heavy weight on our shoulders – a constant concern on our heart. And what’s worse is that neither inner strength nor eloquent expressions can make others understand us.So what are we to do about it?We can follow the example of Jesus. He came not to be served, but to serve. He came not to be ransomed, but to redeem. He came not to be rescued, but to save. And if you will read through Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, you will be encouraged to notice that he didn’t come to be understood. In fact, he was willing to be misunderstood – precisely because he understood us.So my life becomes easier if I decide to be more understanding toward you, and less worried about being understood by you.Jesus didn’t seek to be understood. Because he understood.Which do you?
